SAM_1319.JPG

Pickling is one of the oldest methods used for preserving various food items including fish. It is largely remained as a household art in Maritime Areas. Pickling protects the food and also helps to retain its wholesomeness and nutritive value for a long time. A variety of methods have been reported for the preparation of fish pickle.  The method is essentially same for preparing all types of fish pickles and the manufacturing process is not very complicated and requires comparatively less capital investment. Pickles are vividly consumed in most maritime communities in Cameroon.  Like any other vegetable or fruit pickles, fish pickles have also gained popularity in the recent past. The demand for these types of ready to serve fishery products is increasing day by day among the non-vegetarian population in our country. Considering the importance of small fish in the Cameroon diet, sucker fish was chosen in the training for preparing pickle and assessing its quality aspects. Information on the quality can give an idea about the nutritive value, food safety and acceptability of the pickled product from fish. 20 Women received the training in Bamusso

SAM_1292.JPG

Women fish workers in Bamusso Sub Division as in other parts of the world, play critical roles within the fisheries and fishing communities, roles that are often not recognized or supported. Women are particularly active in postharvest fisheries; in marine fishing communities in Bamusso Sub Division, for example, women comprise about 70 per cent of those engaged in fish marketing. They contribute in significant ways to the food security needs of a diverse range of consumers. What are the problems women fish vendors face on a regular basis? How have women organized themselves to deal with these problems? What are some of the initiatives, governmental and non-governmental, that have been taken to support women fishworkers? What are the various policy spaces available that women can use to seek greater recognition of their work and their livelihoods within the fisheries? These are some of the issues that PHODEC explore to train the women. PHODEC provides training on fish vending and vendors, the problems faced by women fish vendors, and some of the organizational initiatives they have taken to protect their livelihoods. 40 Women Received the training.
